The HTC Droid DNA

Why My Money Went to a HTC Droid DNA Instead of a HTC One

As you may have seen, I had a glowing review of our HTC One review unit, however we don’t get to keep those nor does T-mobile work at our office. You may have heard that HTC’s golden child is coming to Verizon but as of yet they have not announced a date. With an upgrade past due sitting in my account I had a choice to make, and I eventually chose to purchase an HTC Droid DNA rather than wait for the HTC One.

The main reason I chose to get the DNA instead of buying the (admittedly amazing!) HTC One boils down to cost. Due to some credible sources, I have figured the One to be approximately $200 on contract, while the DNA is a paltry $50 as of this writing. It may be hard to believe, but writing random musings and hocking used laptops does not make one independently wealthy especially when I am responsible for feeding 2 little geeklings.

If you find yourself in the same situation you might want to consider this option yourself. The DNA may be 8 months old and use a slightly older processor but this thing is not “Last Years Phone.” It is a 5 inch 1080p screened behemoth with a 1.5 Ghz, quad core processor, and 2 Gb of RAM. Those are specs that run with the current big boys even if it doesn’t have all the gimmicks and add-ons as it’s younger skinnier brother.

The DNA comes with Android 4.1 overlaid with sense 4, but to be honest that means nothing to me. The stock OS lasted for approximately 5 minutes before I replaced it with Cyanogenmod. Running the lighter, vanilla Android styled ROM the DNA flys just as fast as any other “superphone” (yes, that is a thing now) on the market.

Despite losing those amazing front-facing speakers, and that oh-so-sexy aluminum chassis, I think I made the right choice. I might still experience a tinge of phone envy here and there but I have managed to turn a couple of heads myself especially with my phone in it’s stylish case that I would have never been able to bring myself to hide a One in.For your money, the DNA will get you almost as much bang for quite a bit smaller of a buck.
